Jessi Gold, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Washington University in St. Louis, explains how getting suspended this semester would be a particularly difficult psychic shock for students. âIn the middle of a pandemic, being suspended can have significantly heightened emotional consequences for students,â Gold says. âThose who get suspended and have COVID-19 might physically feel ill from a disease, feel depressed and isolated, and then are facing even more change as they are told that they cannot return to a place where their friends are, and where they were working hard to attain their future goals.
